Alex Pagulayan did not set out to build a brand. He set out to find equipment he could trust.

After more than two decades competing at the highest levels of professional billiards, winning the WPA World Nine-Ball Championship, the U.S. Open, and earning induction into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame, Alex had a standard that most products on the market simply could not meet. If he was going to put his name on something, it had to be something he would actually use himself. That principle became the foundation of everything everything Pagulayan Cues makes.

WHERE IT STARTED

Alex was born in Cabagan, Isabela, in the Philippines. His father managed a billiard hall, and the game found him young. At 16, he moved to Toronto, Canada, where he trained obsessively, sharpening his game against established players at Loma's pool hall until his skill outgrew every room he was playing in.

What followed was a career that billiards has rarely seen. He claimed the 2004 WPA World Nine-Ball Championship in Taipei, Taiwan. He won the U.S. Open Nine-Ball Championship the following year. He took the World Pool Masters title in 2008. He won Derby City. He won the World Summit of Pool. He competed across 9-ball, 8-ball, one-pocket, and snooker, and excelled at all of them. From the time he turned professional, he was never ranked outside the world's top 16 on the recognized worldwide money list. In 2019, he was inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame as the first Canadian player ever honored.

He did all of this with humor, generosity, and a genuine love for the game that crowds noticed immediately. He became The Lion — not just for the nickname, but for everything it stood for. A player who showed up, competed hard, and made you glad you were watching.

WHY THE BRAND EXISTS

The chalk came first.

Alex had spent years running through chalk formulas, looking for something that gripped consistently, stayed clean on the tip, and did not need reapplying every other shot. He tested everything available. Nothing hit all three. So he developed his own.

What came out of that process became the Pagulayan Blue Chalk and Pagulayan Green Chalk — two distinct formulas for two different preferences. The Blue is softer and grittier, built for players who want maximum feel on the tip. The Green is harder and creamier, made for players who want fewer applications between shots and a cleaner finish. Both are Alex's own formula. Neither existed until he made them.

The Pristine carbon fiber shaft came from a different frustration. Alex had always been a wood shaft player. The warm, connected feedback of tight-grain maple was something he had never found replicated in carbon fiber, and he had tried everything on the market. Working inside their Canadian workshop, the team spent years experimenting — testing deflection, vibration, mass distribution, and impact feedback — until the Pristine produced the hit Alex trusted. It was the first carbon fiber shaft he would actually play with.

That process, try everything, settle for nothing, build it if it does not exist — is how every product in the Pagulayan lineup was made.
